Make Prospects BEG to Join Your Mailing List!
If you’re a chocoholic, there are few things more tempting than a plate full of glossy… seductively smooth… melt-in-your mouth chocolates.
Just imagine. You’re at a fancy event and you spot the dessert display just filled with chocolate confections – towering before your astonished eyes. Diet-be-damned, you’re going to shove a few handfuls of sweets into your mouth.
Personally, I feel no shame in owning up to this. I was born by Hershey, PA, so it’s practically in my blood to love everything cocoa.
For any weirdos who don’t like chocolate, bear with me…
When it comes to marketing your business, imagine the fire-hose of leads that would flow in if you could make an offer just half as effective as a display of mouth-watering chocolate to a hungry crowd.
Your email list would grow like a grass fire in the driest months of summer. The course you’re trying to promote would be flooded with eager participants. And, your online audience would swell in size within weeks.
So, what’s the magic sauce? How do you lure visitors in so they’ll obediently flow into your sales funnel – willing and happy to read your marketing materials? What can you offer them that would be so incredibly tempting they couldn’t possibly pass it up?
What’s your form of digital chocolate?
The answer is to create a “Temptation Lead Magnet” to grab your prospect’s attention and peak their interest.
This little PDF gem – often as simple as a cheat sheet or an eBook – will promise to solve an immediate problem for your audience. It’s a bite-sized piece of content and doesn’t need to be long or involved. In fact, the very best Temptation Lead Magnets are quick and easily digestible.
They’ll leave your prospect thinking, “Wow, this info is SUPER helpful! I can tell you know your stuff. Send me more!”
After you deliver your bowl of digital chocolate, your prospect will find a quick and easy solution to one of their most pressing problems. In return, you’ll earn their email address so they can be entered into your sales funnel as a potential paying customer.
Besides starting a relationship with your prospect, a well-crafted Temptation Lead Magnet will also help you be seen as a credible source of knowledge. You’ll gain their trust and open their minds to future dealings with your company or brand.
I add the word “Temptation” to “Lead Magnet” for a very simple reason. Magnets are cold and impersonal – relying on the rigid laws of physics to operate. The addition of “Temptation” does a much better job of describing the emotions and physical needs your prospect will feel.
Because they have real problems that are plaguing their minds each time they lay down to sleep. It’s your job to identify those needs and help them find a better way.
So, without further ado, let’s dive into this sweet bowl of marketing goodness. With a well-performing Temptation Lead Magnet, your marketing system will operate like a smooth chocolate factory (minus the little orange men…)
Attract Prospects Like Ants to a Picnic
A Temptation Lead Magnet is a classic form of inbound marketing. In other words, you are dangling a carrot to the world and waiting for prospects to come to you. It’s much more efficient than outbound marketing where you need to actively go out and chase people — waving your carrots like a mad person.
The freebie PDF product you create for your Temptation Lead Magnet should be something with enough value that you prospect is ready and willing to “pay” you with their full attention. In most cases, this means entering in an email address.
Now, that may sound like a low price, but remember, people are more guarded than ever with email addresses these days. Earning someone’s contact information is not to be taken lightly.
Temptation Lead Magnets can be used other places within your marketing funnel as well. For instance, you might post a Facebook ad with a Temptation Lead Magnet, which takes the prospect directly to a landing page for your product or course.
Regardless of how it’s used, this marketing tool will help make prospects sit up and pay attention to what you’re trying to say. Yup! Just like a horde of starving ants who just discovered your picnic…
While the options are virtually limitless, most Temptation Lead Magnets can be characterized as a:
- Guide / eBook
- Template
- Worksheet / Workbook
- Cheat sheet
- Infographic
- Toolkit/resource list
- Video training
- Assessment/test
Personally, I’m a teacher-turned-marketer, so I appreciate the value of a Temptation Lead Magnet that instructs. These types of offers tend to be worksheets, guides, checklists, or cheat sheets. Your prospect will need to actively engage with the product, apply the knowledge to their own personal situation, and arrive at a useful solution.
Plus, these types of Temptation Lead Magnets naturally allow you to request feedback. Have your prospect fill out a worksheet or formula and send back a note reporting on their progress with questions. It’s a great way to quickly open a conversation with a prospect and provide even more value.
Shape the Way Your Prospect Views Your Business
No matter which way you look at it, Temptation Lead Magnets separate the smart cookies from the… for lack of a better term… the boring crackers of the marketing world.
Well… if we’re talking crackers and cheese, that may be a whole other matter.
A strong Temptation Lead Magnets will make your job as a marketer easier and more effective. You’ll attract inbound leads regularly while reaping some of these additional benefits:
- Display some of your personality and company values.
- Identify, select and groom your ideal prospects.
- Show you can be trusted since you deliver what you say.
- Offer real value so you can be seen as an authority – they’ll want to learn from you again and again.
On the other hand, a poorly constructed Temptation Lead Magnets will have the opposite effect. I see many businesses just “throw together” something quick to act as their offer. They don’t put care or thought into the contents.
Trust me, your prospect will immediately get a bad taste in their mouths when you don’t perfect your recipe. And when we eat something that gives us a bad taste – we usually spit it out!
5 Keys to a Good Temptation Lead Magnet
In order to satisfy your prospect and keep them coming back for more, your Temptation Lead Magnet should…
#1 Focus on Your Prospect First –
Think about the pain points for your ideal prospect. What worries and emotions are keeping them up at night? How can you help them solve this problem? Focus on a specific problem or roadblock where you can help them find immediate results.
#2 Use the “Power of One” –
When someone is thirsty for a drink of water, you don’t blast them with the fire hose. Instead, you offer them a clean glass of water they can drink quickly.
So, think of just a small amount of information you can deliver. Don’t overwhelm your prospect with a million ideas they’ll need to consume in multiple sessions. Instead, choose ONE big strong idea you want to get across.
#3 Be Quick and Easy to Consume —
Over and over again, I see marketers with Temptation Lead Magnet that rival War and Peace for length. These long products often get saved – and consequently lost – in the files of a prospect’s computer.
Instead, make your product short and to-the-point. It should be consumed right away in one sitting so the prospect can immediately benefit from your information.
#4 Take Care with the Written Content and Graphic Design –
Remember what I said about getting a bad taste in one’s mouth? Well, an ugly or poorly written Temptation Lead Magnet is the perfect way to spoil your new relationship with a prospect. So make sure you take care with the construction and content of the product.
Perhaps, use Jon Carlton’s approach: “Tell them who you are, tell them what you got, tell them what it will do for them, and tell them what to do next.”
#5 Fit Your Temptation Lead Magnet into Your Overall Strategy —
An effective Temptation Lead Magnet will naturally lead your prospect into the next step of your sales process. This may mean their email is added to your mailing list where they begin receiving a nurture sequence filled with more helpful advice and offers. Or, a Temptation Lead Magnet might lead your prospect to a sales page where they can make a purchase for your training system or online course.
Don’t make the mistake of delivering your product and then not following up in some fashion or another. Otherwise, it’s an opportunity lost completely.
Time to Get Practical…
Now that we’ve talked about the reasons WHY you need a Temptation Lead Magnet, let’s look at the HOW. For some of you, this might mean writing, building, and designing the PDF product yourself.
A simple program like Microsoft Word or PowerPoint can be a great place to get started when building your Temptation Lead Magnet. Write out your content and remember to keep your ideal prospect and their problem at the front of your mind.
It’s tempting to try to solve everyone’s problem, but instead, be specific and help you prospect solve that one most pressing problem with a quick and easy solution.
Use some basic principles of good design to make sure your product looks organized and professional. Some may find value in bringing a graphic designer on for this stage of the process.
Others may feel more confident bringing out their inner Michelangelo to make a visual masterpiece.
Decide how you are going to output your product so it is in a usable form. For many businesses, this is going to mean outputting to a small-sized PDF file so your product can be easily downloaded, emailed, and saved to your prospect’s computer.

In the end, just remember to think of your prospect first. Because if they, too, are a weirdo and don’t like “digital chocolate,” you may need to get creative – offering some other tasty morsel of information.
People who don’t like chocolate confuse me…
Regardless of how you build, design, and output your Temptation Lead Magnet, a successful effort will do a world of good for your business. Good luck!
