I eased open the heavy door and slipped into the large conference room scanning for an empty seat…
There was a guy on stage enthusiastically talking about how to use a joke formula to create a sales hook.
He was tall and thin, walking back and forth across the stage, coaxing laughs from the crowd like a seasoned pro.
Hmm… who is this Kevin Rogers guy? I sat back in my chair to listen. Then, I started furiously taking notes…
It wasn’t for another whole year that I really learned about Kevin and his Copy Chief community.
And within just a few months, his community and his RFL coaching program helped me drastically change the course of my business.
First, my backstory…
As many of you may know, I actually got my professional start as a high school science teacher. I entered into the world of direct response marketing back in 2012 and quickly fell in love with the challenges and opportunities it presented.
By 2016, I had built up my career as a copywriter and direct response graphic designer. I was working with several businesses who had me managing the content on their websites. I was also writing regularly for an online magazine and doing graphic design for a variety of businesses.
But I was ready for more. I was looking for that “next step” to propel my business, my mindset, and my income upwards.
Enter Kevin Rogers…
As a new member of Kevin’s Copy Chief community, I was instantly impressed by the high caliber of writers inside. The top names in the industry were actively engaging with Kevin and his members. In fact, I first heard the term “RFL” from a compliment given my Parris Lampropoulos during a free training call he was hosting.
After some initial research, I realized that RFL was going to be the perfect coaching program for me to take my copywriting business to the next level. It was aimed at people who were already “proving the model” and making steady income as writers.
Now, it was our chance to “visualize, specialize, legitimize, and capitalize” on our skills and specialty.
The ‘Real Free Life’ Experience
This was an 8-week course with around 18 participants. Besides Kevin, two co-coaches named Angie and Melanie (each superstars in their own right) assisted.
During four of the weeks, our group had a session with Kevin to learn how to change our perspective on what and how we could run our businesses. This wasn’t a “how to get your first client” or “how to improve your writing” type of seminar.
Instead, it was “how can YOU specialize and offer something unique so that your business can grow and you can help more clients.”
The non-class weeks were filled with a Q&A session where we could hop on the Zoom call with Kevin and ask questions. Hearing questions from my classmates (and his answers) was often just as or more valuable to me than simply asking questions myself.
Then, there were the office hours. Both Melanie and Angie invited the whole class to attend either or both office hour sessions. We were in an open Zoom meeting with our faces displayed Brady Bunch style on the screen.
It was just a conversation really. We asked questions, joked around, cleared out “head trash” or those insecurities that plagued us all. Then, we helped each other come to solid realizations about how we could improve our businesses, offers and positioning.
In a word, it was wonderful. I absolutely loved office hours.
The final main element of RFL was the homework assignments and forums. Our group of 18 was given a private area within Copy Chief to post our homework responses and have conversations.
I typically spent 2-3 hours each week working through the materials. And the chatting in the forums was really impressive. People were sharing ideas, giving feedback, and freely helping each other work towards breakthroughs.
My Favorite Part of RFL
This is easy for me. It was the people.
This program allowed me to connect with an incredibly talented and kind group of professionals literally across the globe. Of our 18 participants, a core group of us have stayed in touch and developed much closer bonds.
We keep in touch during monthly calls, lift each other up when we’re down, share tools and resources, and help inspire each other. As one member often says, “Iron sharpens iron, my friends!”
How You Can Use RFL to Sky Rocket Your Own Business
There are some definite things you can do and shouldn’t do if you want to get the most out of RFL.
- First off, take it seriously. I literally treated it like a college level class. I bought my shiny new notebook to take notes, worked on my homework each day, and met every deadline.
- Show up live whenever possible. Often, with online coaching programs, we think we can buy the course and then “get to it later.” The true magic of RFL comes with the relationships and one-on-one interaction with the coaches. So, I encourage you to make it a live experience.
- Get comfortable making videos. One of the first things we were asked to do was to make a recorded video of ourselves talking to the group. Later, these videos became more complicated and used something called the POSER formula. I wasn’t sure of this at first, but delivering content via video is an excellent way to build your authority… so get used to it!
- Participate and give feedback to your classmates. The more you give, the more you’ll get back in return. Use that philosophy in the forums and help out your classmates as much as you can. I still feel like some of the people in my group went above and beyond in helping me. I’m working hard to return that favor.
- Work on clearing that “head trash.” We talked a lot about clearing out those feelings of insecurity and doubt during this program. Every one of us had some sort of obstacle standing in our way that we had to push past. Be open to some mental housekeeping and your eyes will open to some new and exciting opportunities.
How Things Have Changed since RFL
My biggest takeaway from this coaching program has to be my specialty of lead magnets. I say “new” but the truth is that I’ve loved making lead magnets for a long time now. I just never realized it!
I’ve always enjoyed creating educational products that would inform and help my prospect. And, when you add the PDF design element, I’m in heaven. It’s my favorite type of work and RFL helped me realize this.
Now, I’ve focused my efforts on helping my clients create attention grabbing lead magnets that will excite, engage, and energize their prospects.
Since going through the program, my business has undergone some pretty amazing changes. First of all, you may have heard me chat with Kevin on his Copy Chief Radio podcast about Lead Magnets People will Actually Use.
I also have exciting plans to continue helping my readers (YOU!) develop and perfect your own lead generation strategies. In the next few weeks, I will be releasing a Lead Magnet Training Video that walks you through your topic, structure, design, and funnel strategy for lead magnets.
This new focus and excitement in my business has been a game changer for me. I literally have to keep a notebook ready for when new ideas pop into my head. I’m excited about my business and eager to see how things develop in the future.
If you’d like to hear more about my story, check out this recent episode of Copy Chief Radio where Kevin and I talk about my RFL experience.
Click here if you’d like to learn more about Copy Chief and get on the RFL wait list. It only runs about twice a year and Kevin will only let people in who are a good fit for the program.
And of course, I’m happy to answer your specific questions. Drop me an email and we can chat.
